I’ll Take HIS Better

“It never gets easier you just get better.” ― Jordan Hoechlin

At first glance, (or maybe when I was not as spiritually mature as I am now) I would have interpreted this quote to mean one of the following:

  1. As long as I practice, I’ll gradually improve.

  2. Achieving excellence is a mental state, so just keep focused.

  3. Staying consistent will eventually lead to improvement, thus, success.

And to be honest, all of these could apply—Agreed? I mean let’s be real—We’ve been conditioned to think that all that’s required to get to the next level is hard work, discipline, commitment, etc. Trust me when I say that as a mother of two highly competitive individuals and the wife of one whom, performing at the highest athletic level (be it personally or coaching another to do so) is a God-given gift; these are admirable character traits. No one will argue that.

But as we grow in our faith, I suspect that at some point we find that no matter how much we practice, how laser-sharp our focus is or how regularly we engage in the said activity; sometimes it just doesn’t work out like we had thought or planned. And it is at THIS POINT that we are able to appreciate that He may be calling us to “...Be still, and know that I am God...”

I’m not suggesting that we forgo doing or being the things that make us greater or allow us to excel—I’m just choosing to rest a little easier in the comfort of knowing that when I’ve done all that I can, He ALWAYS does the rest.
