Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable

I recently overheard my son-in-law, while he was virtually teaching his 7th grade class, encourage his students by telling them it’s necessary to find comfort in uncomfortable situations.

He went on to give some examples that they might encounter like public speaking and how he’s relied heavily on focusing on one person in the audience and speaking directly to them. Great trick that I’ve often used and was able to get through many presentations effortlessly.

But later in the day after his class was over, I was still pondering how significant that thought is, even beyond a 7th grade class or speaking engagement.

When we commit our hearts and life to being kingdom minded, we’re sure to find ourselves in some uncomfortable circumstances. There’s not much physical comfort when we’re expected to uncomfortably call out injustice or wrong doing. Quite frankly, the discomfort can at times become painful because we anticipate the negativity that is regularly associated with standing out amongst others and potentially going against the grain of the majority.

Beyond fixating on one person in the room, there’s even more comfort in walking onstage, preparing for a small group, or these days; logging onto Zoom, with the reassurance that God is right by our side. He may not change the circumstances of an uncomfortable situation in our timing, but He makes sure we’re comforted in knowing that He’s not only close, but will never leave!

No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.
